When I decided to leave my job as a software designer to become a stay-at-home parent, the constant refrain in my mind through the uncertainty was “cast out into the deep”—duc in altum. From the words of Jesus in the gospel of Luke (chapter 5, verse 4), I was encouraged to strike out into waters that, although familiar, contained an abyss of uncertainty; to lower my nets for a catch despite not knowing what might be under the water.
